293 – Absorbing Man

Crusher Creel, aka The Absorbing Man, aka not Nick Nolte. Back in Junior High I was buying Marvel Universe trading cards, and I remember my friends and I seeing the Absorbing Man card (If I remember correctly, done by Art Adams). They had power stats and things on the back of the cards, including one for mental abilities. His was “mentally deficient”, a phrase that burrowed itself into my brain, where it still resides to this day.

I really like the shape of his head as well as how gnarly his hand is!
This character lends himself to be exaggerated to the extreme. It always disappoints me to see a comic artist draw him like a normal dude. he’s clearly a distant relation to Sloth from The Goonies!

  1. It probably comes from my time working with you, but I really like seeing ugly characters or characters drawn ugly. And I totally don’t mean that as a bad thing. I just really appreciate that not every character is a model, and ugly characters are definitely more visually interesting. I think it also goes along with me growing to like more cartoony art over “realistic” art too.
I wish I would have maybe exaggerated this more.
