Hal Jordan

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

I know I’ve said I’ll never draw Hal Jordan, but money talks and for an extra 10 bucks, he’ll be my favoritist Green Lantern ever, too.

This is the first of a series of commissions for Keith Stidham. He’s chipping in a little extra for the splash of color. I used regular ol’ blue pencil and light pencils for the layout, Copic Multiliners for inking the figure, a Staedtler Triplus color pen for the shape of the boxing glove, Copic gray sketch markers for the figure and Chartpak color markers for the greens.

The Chartpak markers are a set that I had to buy in art school, which are now 16 years old. When I graduated and moved, I wound up selling the markers, because I never thought I would use them again. I sold them to a woman who I would later wind up dating for 8 years, so it was almost like I still had them, but I never used them. Now that we are broken up, I am borrowing these markers from her. Most of the set is still intact and barely used.

Slumber Party Murder Mania

Monday, April 30th, 2012

My friend Matt Brassfield once again asked me to do another DVD cover for him, this time for a film his production company (Bloodline Video) is releasing called Slumber Party Murder Mania. The DVD is available for sale right now.

Loki

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

My friend Kathleen Coyle stepped up with the first sale of the 10 dollar commissions. She wanted Loki, as she has seemingly become obsessed with him from the Thor movie and upcoming Avengers. She told me it was okay if I drew the comic version, but I knew that she really wanted the Tom Hiddleston version. I tried to get the costume and helmet as close as possible, but it seemed like every picture I found of him was slightly different. Still, it was kind of fun to draw.

Creator Owned Day: Range

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Range, as in “Home on the…” or “Open…”.

It’s “Creator Owned Day”. Create a concept or character, post it on your blog, link to it via Twitter, hash-tag it #CreatorOwnedDay. Check out the story behind it.

In my previous post, I presented an idea from a friend of mine. I drew it to try to get my own ideas flowing. I was not having any luck. I was trying too hard. Then I remembered that I’d kept sketching this masked cowgirl at work on post-its for a few days. Then it finally came together.

“Range” is the story of an unhinged woman who – for reasons not thought of yet – decides to become a vigilante in the urban metropolis in which she lives. She dresses like a modern-day Lone Ranger and begins to mete out justice. She eventually meets a fellow lost soul in the form of an enthusiastic sociopath who gloms onto her and becomes her dapper and violent sidekick.

Needs some more time to cook, but I’m glad I pulled it out.

Creator Owned Day: Astro-Toddler

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

So today, apparently is “Creator Owned Day”. Basically, create a concept or character, post it on your blog, link to it via Twitter, hash-tag it #CreatorOwnedDay. This is where I read about it.

Seems simple, seems easy. I’ve been making up characters since the early 90s.

I had a very hard time under the gun. I could have just posted any old character I’ve had running around my head, but I decided to try a new concept.

It didn’t work out, so, with assumed permission from my friend Joe Grunenwald, I present ASTRO-TODDLER. Joe recently came up with the concept and name, and I just quickly sketched it out. We’ll be fleshing it out more when he gets back to town next week.

I did manage to come up with something on my own as well. That’ll be up shortly.
