034 – The Flash

Back cover to yesterday’s blank variant cover. Again, this will be up on eBay soon, unless perhaps you’d like to make an offer, Joe (or anyone). So y’know, yesterday’s relevant text here.

Also, still, the new Flash TV show delights me. So does the original.

That said – and I know I’ve mentioned this multiple times in multiple places – whenever you see me draw The Flash, it is always Wally West. Despite Barry being back in the comics, despite him being the star character of two television programs (and an upcoming movie played by someone else for some reason), I will always draw Wally. Always Wally. Always. He is MY Flash. He is THE BEST Flash.

033 – Reverse Flash

I believe I’ve made my love of the blank variant covers publicly known. Seriously. I love them. The paper… oh lord, the paper. I’ve drawn two of these in as many weeks, and I think I’ve officially become addicted to drawing on them. Seriously. I’m jonesing for the next one. Unfortunately, I don’t have any access to one now. I need to build up a stash. Or, if you have one and want to pay me some money, I’d gladly draw on one.

My pal Joe donated this Flash #39 cover to me so I could add it to my other new addiction – trying to sell my art on eBay. I may not be the Flash fan Joe is (no one is), but I do enjoy drawin’ me some Flash characters.

Sidebar: The Flash TV show makes me incredibly happy. It is a joy to watch each and every time.

I decided to draw the old DCU Reverse Flash on this nu52 cover, ’cause, well, they old DCU costumes and characters are the best versions. Decided to try some coloring on this. Over the last couple years, I’ve been experimenting with gray Copics, and I find them a joy to work with. I need to work with them more. But also, I need to refill a few of them. I got the lady into working with Copics last summer, and she became temporarily obsessed with them, buying a ton of colors. I asked her to use them to color this cover, but she did not have a yellow, which is kind of an important color for this character. So I broke out my old Chartpaks from art school from 17 years ago. I was afraid the markers wouldn’t be as versatile as the Copics, but was pleasantly surprised. I’m relatively pleased with how this turned out.

032 – Superman

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a different version of Superman.

031 – Cthulhu Brown

I am delighted with myself on this one.

I watched Big Hero 6 last night, and I am a bit upset I missed this in the theater. Some thoughts: Baymax and I share far too many traits. It’s weird that Disney did not play up the Marvel Comics angle. The only credit to that point is to “Man of Action”, the studio founded by Steven Seagle, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau, and Joe Casey. Seagle & Rouleau created BH6, but I believe this was before the Man of Action days. Add to that, the two BH6 comics had no involvement from MoA (written by Scott Lobdell – the worst writer in comics, and Chris Claremont – the worst writer in comics who used to be great, respectively). There is one Marvel connection the movie keeps, and that is… the post-credit tag. No spoiler. Other than that, BH6 was a ton of fun and very touching, and I hope there is a sequel in the works.

Last night, I watched a movie that drove me to tears with it’s questions about faith, family, morality, life, death, survival, and what it means to be a man. Ultimately, the answers I felt the movie presented were simple: Embrace death. It is coming, and it will be lonely and extremely painful. There is some satisfaction in the struggle to remain alive, but it is pointless. Death will be horrific and yet peaceful, and no one will care, not even you. Embrace death, expect it, and welcome it.

This is also a movie that features Liam Neeson punching a wolf in the face with broken liquor bottles taped to his hand, like a hobo Wolverine. I watched The Grey and it was kind of an amazing and heartbreaking horror movie.
