146 – Astro Boy

This fulfills a request for Jim Purcell, a guy who has been one of my biggest supporters for a few years now, despite the fact that I am constantly letting him down. We met online at the old Newsarama message boards, and we were both members of the weekly art group there.

I don’t know a thing about Astro Boy. I’ve never seen any incarnation of his cartoon, I’ve never read any of the manga or have seen the most recent CGI movie. The only thing I know about him is from the Frank Miller/Geoff Darrow homage/parody Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot. Which is to say, not a lot.

Also Frank Miller has lost his fucking mind, right?

Sweet. For someone who doesn’t know Astro Boy at all, that’s a really cool rendition of him, with a real sense of strength and energy.
Everyone should do themselves a favor and read a couple volumes of the Astro Boy manga (available from Dark Horse), if only because Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka is one of those incredible Writer/Artists that basically invent an entire artform. He’s pretty much the Japanese equivalent of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Only he’s one guy. Much of his non-Astro Boy work is also deceptively mature and cutting edge for its time. The guy was a real trail blazer in terms of comic making.

Eric, did you read the Frank Miller interview in the back of DHP#1?

  1. I was afraid to. Should I?

That’s the latest crazy i’ve read from him. He talks about research & how it should be done then ignored. Also the preview art from 299 or whatever it’s caled is aweful.
