Deadpo- I mean – Deathstroke!

Deathstroe

I was a fan of the Marv Wolfman/George Perez Teen Titans late in life. I wound up picking up a bundle of issues that included the “Judas Contract” storyline from a used bookstore when I was 18 or 19. I was aware of Deathstroke from his own series, but had assumed he was just a Punisher rip-off. He’s more like Captain America gone bad. In my mind, anyway. Anyhoo, he’s a little overexposed at the moment, but he’s a great villain with a great look and design. Whenever they changed his costume, it was a crime against humanity.

I drew a Deathstroke sketch about a year ago for the purposes of putting it on here at some time. I found it while digging around looking for stuff to update the blog with, but it was not something I felt good about. I feel like I’m striving toward a more cartoony style, and the old drawing wasn’t bombastic enough (not that this is, either). But I think this new drawing is more where I’d like to head to, stylistically.

I dunno. I’m full of it.

This week on Gutter Trash: Demolition Man.

I’ve never understood why Deathstroke was such a huge character in the ’90s. He’s a great character, sure, but it seems like he got caught up in the whole ‘grim ‘n’ gritty’, anti-hero wave. How he supported his own title, I do not know.

Nice drawing, by the way. Loves me some Titans-related stuff.

I’ve watched your style evolve in the last couple years and it is definitely getting looser and more dynamic. Also the coloring is pretty superb as well. Thumbs in the air mutha-fukka!

  1. Indeed, Eric your art never fails to impress. Its always got such an energy about it.

  2. My favorite Deathstroke moment is Identity Crisis #3 – you know, the fight scene that takes place after he’s been hired to guard the cowardly Dr. Light, who’s afraid of retribution from the Justice League.

Now, I know, comics fans either hate Identity Crisis or love it. I love it because it made me want to read comics again.

But that’s all beside the point. I bring it up because your Deathstroke incorporates the best parts of Morales’ and Bair’s Deathstroke from IC – the way they render the eyehole, the chainmail on his arms and legs, the long shorts (I hate the Superman-tight, bikini-brief like shorts that a lot of artists give Deathstroke), and the big, floppy boots.

    Nice job!
