I really missed drawing Batman.

952. Pennywise

Yesterday I got a chance to see the new adaptation of Stephen King’s IT. I don’t remember much of the 90s TV miniseries, other than Harry Anderson of Night Court fame played the adult version of Richie. I also don’t remember much about the book. I don’t consider it the best King book I’ve read, but it’s definitely the only book that ever actually scared me.

So, the new movie is the “past” section of the story, and, while it has some lulls, weak acting, and logic issues, it is very creepy and intense. Most of the kids are great, but Bill Skarsgard is absolutely incredible as the new Pennywise – when he isn’t just a weird CG thing, that is. But when he’s just being a menacing clown… oh fuck. Seriously, his very 1st scene alone is worth seeing the movie.

We all float down here.

951. Thundarr the Barbarian

Locally-based Kyle Hotz is an amazing comic artist, and he’s intimidating as hell. 1st of all, there’s the whole amazing art thing of which I fall short. 2nd, I’m pretty sure he’s taller than me, and at 6’3″, I’m no slouch. Plus he’s ripped like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Lundgren all in their primes, and I’m a fat asthmatic. He’s also an incredibly nice guy and I’m a raging asshat.

There’s a lot to live up to.

So, about a month ago my dear departed friend Joe G. suggested I draw something Thundarr the Barbarian related. I said sure. I finished the drawing yesterday, only to see Kyle Hotz draw a fantastic Thundarr. I can’t compete. But. Here’s my dumb take.

949. Daredevil

Marvel Batman.

948. Batman

September 5, 1992 – 25 years ago today – Batman: The Animated Series debuted on Fox. It’s easily in the top 5 cartoons ever produced, and sadly nothing like it will ever be allowed to air again. The maturity of the stories, writing, and voice acting – all the while being dark, yet fun, simple, yet complex, and totally suitable for kids. The pure style of the visuals, airing on a major network not just weekly, but daily. It’s part of a bygone era, and grampa here misses those days. Admittedly streaming services, on demand, etc. takes some of that sting away, but from the production end of things, we’ll never have anything close to it ever again. Cue unwritten rant about traditional 2-D animation too, shaking my fist at passing clouds.

Also, guys, it’s been a REAL long time since I drew a Batman. Real long time.
