912a. War of the Roses

Hey! I’ve been posting artist sketch cards since March. That’s kind of crazy. Well, they stopped today, and tomorrow, of course is the beginning of 100 Kirbys.

But before we get to that, I figured I’d post this bonus piece. I’ve been working on this for a few weeks now (when I shoulda been drawing Kirbys). It’s an ink and watercolor painting that I am donating to my favorite charity WE CARE ARTS for their annual ARTS & DRAFTS Festival on August 5th, 2017. There will be beer, music, food trucks, art, and tattoo artists there! The theme is “War of the Roses”, and this is a piece that’s been living in my head for a while. I think my friend/sponsor just assumed I’d do a comic-related piece, but I’ve been living and breathing comic pieces for a very long time now, and wanted to try something different.

Sadly I won’t be able to attend the festivities this year, but I hope this piece sells.

That said, I have scanned it and will probably make prints later.

912. Scarecrow

And that’s all. The last of the sketch cards. Tomorrow: 100 Kirbys!

911. Mr. Fixit & Havok

Never forget.

910. Groot & Iron Man

909. The Flash & Wonder Woman

Always Wally. This card actually led to a small bit of awkwardness. Kid requested The Flash, I said cool. I would have drawn Wally West, as I always (Always Wally) do. He then specifically said “Wally West”. I said ok, awesome. But then I stopped. I would argue that the majority of folks, especially those coming in for Free Comic Book Day, only know of Wally West from the tv show. Then I kind of had to dance around the question of “White Wally or Black Wally”. I would have drawn either. But he said, “original Wally, but in his Rebirth costume”. And here we are. Yay for subtle racism!

Wonder Woman was maybe the 4th one I drew that day. It was the best one. Very popular a full month before the movie even opened.

908. Daryl Dixon & Spike

I hate likenesses, but thought I managed to capture some of these characters.

907. Hulk & Solomon Grundy

100 Kirbys

August 28th, 2017 would have been Jack “King” Kirby’s 100th birthday.

In order to celebrate, all throughout the month of August I will be posting 100 Jack Kirby creations.

Each of the 100 sketches is on 9 x 12 bristol board, and I will be selling every single one for a minimum of 5 (five) DOLLARS. I will donate ALL PROCEEDS FROM THESE SALES TO THE HERO INITIATIVE. If you choose to pay more, by all means, please do, but again, a minimum of 5 dollars will get you a piece of original art of a Kirby creation (unfortunately) drawn by me!

Request a sketch be to held, and if you buy multiples, I will ship them at the end of the month. Email me, message me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or leave a reply here on the blog.

First come, first served.

Help me celebrate The King, and help a good cause.

906. Deathstroke & Robin

The Robin request was specifically for the TEEN TITANS GO version, so I had to look it up. While in the middle of drawing it, I was questioning the double widow’s peak, and then realized that actually, Robin’s hair is an upside-down bat. Mind. Blown.

905. Sue & Silk

So I’m doing sketches for people, and this timid, kindly older lady is watching me draw for someone else. When I finish, I look at her and ask her if she wants a sketch, and point out the remaining pre-mades as well. She asks if I can draw her. I do. I’m bad at likenesses, but she seems pleased. I think her name was Sue.

Unfortunately, that set off a bad precedent and then I had to draw two different girls and fucking baby, and then someone wanted a zebra and another wanted a cat. I should have put a stop to it immediately. Word to the wise, you want portraits or caricatures? Ok, but I’m not gonna do it within 5 minutes at a comic shop crammed with a thousand people trying to get free books.

Oh, and I drew Silk.
