120. The Black Hood

Last night while drawing with my friend Jason, I started to draw Conan the Barbarian. It looked okay in pencil, but the second I added ink to it, it got ruined. So I scrapped it. It took the wind out of my sails a little. But Jason, having just brought home a short box of comics from a show he was at, was drawing a character called The Black Hood – inspired by one of the books he picked up. Back in 1991 or whenever, I remember reading the first couple issues of the comic, from the DC Comics imprint Impact Comics. They had licensed the old Archie Comics superhero characters, but Black Hood stood out to me. I loved the first couple issues, but then never bought any others. I remember distinctly, sitting in my parent’s bedroom watching TV and drawing The Black Hood with issue 1 open in front of me. Eventually, I tracked down all 12 issues and the annual. Watching Jason draw this character, with that old comic sitting between us, I got the ol’ nostalgia pangs. I wasn’t gonna let another drawing night be a waste of time. So, I drew The Black Hood as well.

Go see Jason’s version, as it is far, far superior to mine. And also, he’s got a link to the wikipedia page for Black Hood. Fer learnin’.

It happened again. Not sure how. I was hanging out with my friend Joe G., Wednesday’s designated babysitter, and we’re sitting my apartment, eating some sandwiches and talking. Suddenly – and again, I’m not sure how it happened – the Supergirl pilot started playing on my TV! I mean, there must be Gremlins in my media player…

So, since it started playing, we watched it. Joe liked it. I did not.

I had thoughts, but I can’t coherently put them together at the moment. Let’s just say I found the show to be hollow and cheap with some empty-shelled character writing.

112. Furiosa

30-some years ago, I saw MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME on VHS. I don’t really remember it, other than Master Blaster and Tina Turner. It’s the only MAD MAX movie I’ve seen. So, when MAD MAX FURY ROAD was announced, I really coulda cared less. I wasn’t gonna see it. And Charlize Theron? Not a fan.
So, when every human being alive said how great the movie was, my curiosity was piqued. When one review compared it to THE RAID, I knew I had to see it.
Still on my distraction from depression and heartache kick, I thought it’d be a fun distraction. It really wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an absolutely amazing movie. I was completely blown away by it. One of the rare times the hype has lived up. I cannot recommend it enough. It is intense, thrilling and action packed and wonderful. It is also a lot more emotional than I expected. I honestly cried in a few places. That entirely is the fault of Charlize Theron.
I’ve never thought much of her as an actress, but jesus, she is fantastic as Imperator Furiosa. The movie, the story, is wholly hers. It’s Max’s too, but Furiosa’s has the greater impact. Goddammit, Furiosa is amazing. I really want to see FURY ROAD again, as soon as I can.
