110 – Starfire

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Starfire is the Tawny Kitaen of superheroes.

My second Teen Titan that I was inspired to draw due to my Ok, PANIC piece from two weeks ago. So, I’m pretty sure that to every pre-pubescent comic geek in the 80s, Starfire is a total representation of sex, and how frightening and awesome it is. I’m honestly surprised that whenever the exploitation, sexualization and objectification of female comic characters gets brought up, no one ever brings up Starfire, who has to easily be the most scantily clad, busty, slutty mainstream superhero comic character ever created.

What I’m saying is that this was fun to draw.

089 – Mercy Sparx

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

I don’t know anything about this character, but it was a request from my closest friend in the entire world, so I was more than happy to oblige. Once again, I am faced with my limitations on drawing female characters, and this is something I need to work on, particularly to try not to make them all super-busty vixens. Luckily Mercy Sparx is a super-busty vixen, so yay me.

In my reference search for this drawing, I wound up downloading the free sampler issue of Mercy Sparx on Comixology for my phone. I gotta say that I do not enjoy reading comics on my phone, but I can see the general appeal for digital comics.

Dr. Creep’s Assignment Terror

Assignment Terror

This is a recreation of a movie poster. The original title of the film is called Los Monstruos del Terror, renamed in the U.S.A. as Assignment Terror (sometimes Dracula vs. Frankenstein) and is written by and features Spanish horror star Paul Naschy.

My friend Matt Brassfield is putting together a sort of tribute/charity drive for local Dayton, Ohio television icon Dr. Creep. I think every Dayton artist is contributing a piece of art for each episode of Dr. Creep’s New Shock Theater, a revised version of his old late-night horror show. This is the first of two I’m doing for Matt and Dr. Creep (in case you’re wondering he’s the leering gentleman in the beard and hat at the bottom of the drawing).

Power Girl

Power Girl

This is another piece that I had drawn before, but was completely unhappy with how it turned out, stylistically. It’s also an attempt to draw more female characters, and in a style similar to some other drawings on the blog.

Anyway, Power Girl. She’s a huge hit, a massive fan favorite. The size of her popularity is immeasurable.

This week on Gutter Trash: Tideland.
