I remember liking her in LEGION LOST.
I watched Drop Dead Fred. I had always wanted to see this movie when I was a kid, and it just never happened. Stumbled onto it on Netflix. It was okay. Phoebe Cates is lovely and Rik Mayall is always pretty great.
Listen, Saturday May 4th. 2013 is Free Comic Book Day. There’s also a brand new set of Magic: The Gathering that is released this weekend. Even if it were “Get Paid to Read Comic Books Day”, there is no way in hell you could catch me in a comic shop this weekend. The worst of the worst of the worst is going to be out in full force, ball-sweatin’ on a whole stack of free comics and stinking up your lesser comic shops everywhere. It’s awful and I want no part of it.
But now you can enjoy free comics from the safety and pleasantness of your own home!

Lightning Lad’s twin sister. Sort of an amalgam of a bunch of her costumes. Since I had the Lightning Lad file open, I used the same colors. Twins and stuff.
Watched:
Frankenstein Unbound. A 1990 meta/sci-fi take on the Frankenstein story, it was the first credited movie that Roger Corman had directed in 20 years, and the last movie Roger Corman ever directed. It stars John Hurt as a time traveler who meets Mary Shelley (Bridget Fonda), Lord Byron (Jason Patric), Percy Shelley (Michael Hutchence of INXS), Dr. Frankenstein (Raul Julia) and the monster (some guy). He introduces everyone to cars and sunglasses, gives Mary Shelley the novel “Frankenstein” before she writes it – which is based on a “ripped from the headlines” news story that is actually happening, fucks Mary Shelley, helps Dr. Frankenstein build “The Bride” and then travels to the far future where the monster takes over the world. If anything I’ve just describe appeals to you in that incredible run-on sentence, please feel free to rent this movie.

Welcome to May and my first theme month: The Legion of Superheroes!
I’ve got my list of 31 days and 31 Legionnaires to fill ’em up with. I plan on doing other theme months in the future, but we’ll see how this goes first.
As an added bonus/challenge I’m going to color all of them. It’ll mostly just be doing flats, maybe a tone, some simple effects. Nothing fancy. But the Legion is too colorful to leave ’em in B&W.
The Legion intrigues me, but I don’t know a thing about them. I’ve only ever read the original “Legion Lost” series by DnA & Oliver Coipel (whose work in that book is amazing, and much more preferable [to me] to his cleaner style he’s been using since after that comic). I liked “Legion Lost” a lot, but never went any further, forward or backward. I also was a pretty big fan of the animated series. So that said, I’m having to look up every character as I draw them. I’ll be picking and choosing elements from all their incarnations and costumes in my sketches, so die-hards, beware.
Anyhoo.
I watched Rise of the Guardians. It’s enjoyable, but not great. Just missing… something. Ultimately though, it’s fun and an original-ish idea and it’s got a message about innocence that’ll pretty much fuck me up every time.
So, there’s an idiot what lives in my pants. About 20 some days ago, I misread what number the previous post was and jumped ahead. I just noticed this mistake yesterday. It’s resolved now. So instead of Sketch-A-Day 2.0 #90, today is #88. Thank you for bearing with me during this troubling time.
I’ve always had a fondness for Spider-Woman. I think I may have had a few issues of her comic when I was but a lad, long since thrown out in one of my mom’s great purges of my stuff (y’know, like my collection of Garbage Pail Kids of which I had a massive amount). I am seemingly the only person I know who remembered her cartoon series, but at least I now have proof of its existence by owning the DVD collection. Unfortunately, I haven’t really dug any of her stories that I’ve read since her resurgence in the last decade or so.
Movies:
Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. Yup. It’s a movie. And I watched it.
Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassin’s Ball. Also another movie that I watched. While it was better than S!OMMWS, it is far far inferior to the vastly underrated Smokin’ Aces, which should probably surprise no one.
Rewatched Goon with my friend Jason and then we watched Commando. I had never seen it all the way through. It’s dumb, fun, splodey and JEPH LOEB. Also, Schwarzennegger fights an evil Freddy Mercury. JEPH LOEB!
A re-do of this. Slightly better, but still not great.
Yesterday was a weird day. I got half a day off work and I came home fully intending to work on stuff all day and night. Instead I watched a bunch of movies, took a four hour nap, drove around for about an hour while in the midst of some sort of nervous break down, drank an entire bottle of wine and then around midnight finally got some drawing done.
So yeah. Perfectly normal, right?
FDR: American Badass!. I didn’t even finish watching it, but I saw a majority of it. It’s basically about Franklin Delano Roosevelt (played by Barry Bostwick) who gets bitten by a werewolf and contracts polio. When he gets elected to the presidency, he wages war against the werewolves, aka Mussolini, Hitler and Hirohito. If that sounds interesting and fun, then you’ll get duped just like I was.
Nature Calls. Patton Oswalt is a scoutmaster who kidnaps a bunch of kids to go camping, and his brother Johnny Knoxville tries to get the kids back. It’s… eh.
Kuffs. Early 90s Christian Slater action comedy. I saw it back then on video and I liked it. It still holds up. It’s the movie that I learned the rule about PG-13 films can contain one instance of the word “fuck”.
I watched about half of Lockout, the Guy Pierce basically-a-remake-of-Escape from New York/LA-but-on-a-space-station. I had to stop watching so I could actually be productive last night. I’ll finish the rest of it later. What I saw was enjoyable and I liked it better than Escape from New York
