504. Superman

I am paranoid about this drawing for two reasons. 1) I feel like I’m fairly certain that Jason Young has already drawn this and I completely ripped him off. and B) That no one will get the joke.

Last night, I watched the first hour of World War Z. I’d heard a lot of people tell me that it was good. Those people are now dead to me. Fuck that movie. However, tonight, I watched The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled – a documentary about comedians Doug Benson and Graham Elwood on tour, and it was pretty fantastic, if kinda empty. But I giggled – intentionally, so that makes it a winner. Especially compared to WWZ.

500. Blue Beetle

It’s Day 500! Seems like a milestone to me. So, I drew my favorite superhero, Ted Kord aka The Blue Beetle. But you knew that already. What you might not know is that today’s piece is an actual painting – hand painted – with acrylics on colourfix paper. And this is also the first thing I’ve painted in 16 years. I think 1998 – my last year at art school – was the last time I had painted anything.

Below is my progress from initial sketch, to transferring to the paper, to the flats. Everything beyond that was just experimentation until I felt it was done. I’d say that I kind of hate the final piece, but also, it’s not bad for having not done a painting in close to 20 years.

UPDATE: Apparently June 15th was the 75th anniversary of The Blue Beetle (Dan Garrett version)! Serendipity!

Over the last few days, I watched Crank which I enjoyed on a big, loud, dumb level. I watched the first 20 minutes of a movie called Bloody Mallory and decided it would be best to watch that with someone else to soak up the awfulness. And I finally saw the new Godzilla which I will probably talk about on the new Stupid Sexy Podcast next week!
