Thanks to my personal Robin-advisor, Joe Grunenwald, I drew Damian’s current solo series/Batman vs. Robin grey suit. I wasn’t looking forward to it, but I dig it now.

Oh, little Damian Al Ghul-Wayne, you murdery imp. I remember when Grant Morrison introduced him during their run on Batman and hating this little shit. This could almost have been a Jason Todd sitch. I think I was just more upset that Tim had been brought back into the fold pretty hardcore just before Morrison began their run and felt like they ushered Tim out the door pretty quickly. And it didn’t help that Damian was such a goddamn brat, and a murderous assassin to boot.
But, somewhere along the way… he really grew on me. Definitely by the time Dick was taking on the Batman role and Damian was his Robin, I was fully on-board. Probably why I drew the Frank Quitely version here. Third best Robin! (Tim, Dick, Damiam, Everyone Else, Huge Canyon-Sized Gap, Pre-Crisis Bruce Wayne as Robin, Jason).

The Nu52 Earth-2 Robin, Nu52 Earth-2 Helena Wayne – daughter of Nu52 Earth-2 Batman & Nu52 Earth-2 Catwoman – before becoming Nu52 Earth-2 Huntress. I never read this Nu52 Earth-2 book.
Stephanie
The original Tim Drake costume is still the best Robin costume, but this modified version for Stephanie Brown will be the only time I draw it during this theme. Somebody send me waffles.

I tried to make Carrie Kelley’s alternate future Robin costume look a little store-bought. Accurate to the classic Robin suit, but off. No utility belt, even.
I wonder if Dark Knight Returns is even readable nowadays. It certainly ruined Batman for… well, still is ruining Batman.

Tom Wayne is the 21st descendant of Bruce Wayne. Apparently the Wayne family line through the 31st century has settled on only keeping two names in rotation. Listen, I’ll never have children, but if I did, I’d hope that the 31st century Shonborn would be named Cheech or something. No need to keep naming them “Art”, “Gary”, or “Eric”.

Tim Drake is the best Robin. Sorry, Dick. As much as I love Dick, Tim just rules. He was introduced when I got super hardcore into Batman. Sadly, I don’t think he was ever utilized greatly as Batman’s partner, but when he was, he was the best. Also as a solo hero, a Young Justicer, and a Teen Titan, he was the tops, baby. I don’t think Robin as a concept or a whole has been well-utilized since the late 80s. It’s like writers are too ashamed to use him or have Batman play off him – or, for godsake, lighten Batman. When a Robin is around, Batman acts more like a stern general and Robins are his little soldiers. Frank Miller has A LOT to answer for.
But, I hate a dark broody psycho Batman. Well-adjusted Batmen FTW.
Ever since Tim came out as bi, I have read a lot of people wanting to see him hook up with Jon Kent Superman. To that I say: no thank you. It’s already bad enough that they ruined the Damian/Jon dynamic by aging Jon up. What I would like to see, and think it would be interesting, if Jon & Tim just couldn’t stand each other. Not enemies, not rivals. Just… they just rub each other the wrong way. We all have encountered people like that. There’s nothing inherently bad about a person, but for whatever inexplicable reason, you just don’t like them. Meanwhile, Bruce and Clark are best friends and nothing will ever change that. Fuck off, Snack Zyderbros.

I love Robin. He’s the 3rd most important character in superhero history (sorry, Wonder Woman. You’re #4). When I started thinking about how many variations of Robin there are, I realized I could do a theme. So welcome to it!
First up is Jason Todd, the Better Off Dead Robin! I don’t care for Jason Todd. If I’d been aware and allowed, I’d have voted him dead. There should have been a vote to see if he should ever come back. I’d have voted against that too.
Now I’m sure you’re already wondering, where’s Dick? Trust me, Dick is coming. Dick’s gonna come real hard. Patience is a virtue and you will get all the Dick you need, and more! But, I will be shoving all the Dicks in the end. That’s right. Multiple Dicks to finish you off.
